Billie Jean and Psalm 119

26 Jul

Each Monday night in July, four young women have met with me for a Bible study. This week we focused on trusting God to lead our lives when we have no idea what’s ahead.

Emphasizing the importance of staying connected to Him through daily Bible reading and prayer, I referred to Psalm 119:25.

Suddenly, a face brightened and smile flashed, as a 20-year-old excitedly shared this fun thought:

“You know, I think it’s like this. I have never seen it, but I’ve heard about a Michael Jackson video. He is dancing down a street and stepping on, like tiles, that light up. That’s how trusting God is. You take a step and He lights up another one for you. He keeps doing that until you get to where He wants you to be. That is what His word is a lamp for your feet and a light for your path means!”

(Whoa! Never even SEEN Billie Jean? This cannot be true. Because. It. Just. Happened. Yesterday! Right?)

Now, the Gloved One certainly was not making a Biblical application in the video. But my young friend does have a great point. God does not blast a bright spotlight too far ahead in our journeys. It is in the step-by-step revelations where trust is learned. Where we choose to believe in the dark, step forward, and watch him light up the way.

If we could see too far ahead, there would be temptations to create detours around the tough stuff. Or, we might rush ahead, missing the intimacy and blessings only found in daily dependence.

This young lady is just days away from starting a life-changing trip toward her future. And the way God has provided for her already blows my mind. She is going on faith and prayer. One step at a time.

And thanks to her, I will always remember Billie Jean in an entirely different “light”.
